Moral Kombat

The following post was directly influenced by NPR's Hidden Brain episode, Moral Combat. Please give yourself an hour and listen today.

Two plus two equals four. A majority of humans that understand basic math understand that this equation is true. We are convinced and convicted that it is true based on studies and numerous trials that it is in fact, true. When convicted about a truth, we tend to discredit anyone that thinks differently.

"Two plus two does not equal 6, and anyone that thinks this way is a complete idiot...and must have other idiotic opinions...and must hang out with idiotic people."

This all becomes chaotic when we delve into cultural areas that have distinctly two positions. For example, abortion, death penalty, or the legalization of marijuana. There are typically two camps that have their own version of 2 + 2 = 4 understanding about the issue. Those that believe in Pro Choice have their own version of the equation that is the absolute truth as do Pro Life believers. Problems arise when our convictions are so entrenched that we fail to listen to the other side and do immoral things to fight for our side.

I would love to go on, but need to take my son out on an adventure!
